Vendor-neutral data centre solutions provider Teraco has confirmed the construction of Teraco Cape Town 2 (CT2), a new 30MW data centre facility.

This follows the company’s recent 60MW expansion announcement of its Johannesburg data centre campus in Isando and makes the Cape Town facility the second largest on the continent.

Teraco provides carrier and cloud-neutral co-location data centres, and with over 14 500 cross-connects, is Africa’s most interconnected data centre hub.

DATA CENTRE
2017

First hyper scale data centre in Africa.

This is another Teraco first as we broke the mould of

traditional brick and mortar buildings, and opted for a warehouse-type build instead,” said Gys Geyser, head of infrastructure development, at Teraco.

He said that Teraco designed the facility incorporating different elements of tiering solutions to ensure concurrent maintainability, with added enhancements to cover different levels of fault tolerance.

DATA CENTRE
2019

Pan-African telecoms services provider Internet Solutions has invested R500 million to extend its Parklands data centre in Johannesburg.

The company says the extension is the first of its kind at this scale in Sub-Saharan Africa. The facility's design accommodates flexible modules, tailored to specific market requirements, contained within a modern exterior structure.

MAGISTRATE COURT
Plettenberg Bay, Western Cape

PUBLIC SERVICES
2018

B2 Architects set out to establish a contemporary context in the precinct for future projects to build upon.  It was thus important for the Court building to present a distinct bold language; a landmark to announce the precinct.

Inspiration for the façade came from an observation by the project architect of the lines and crevices etched into rocks found on the beaches in the region.

LANCET CYTOLOGY LAB
Richmond, Johannesburg

HEALTHCARE
2018

Lancet Laboratories, one of the leading pathology laboratories, required the relocation and expansion of the Cytology laboratory. This created an opportunity to reinvent the design and functioning of the operations.

The laboratory and support areas offers microscopic and pathologic analysis of cellular structures, often used to support the diagnosis of disease including cancer and other infectious and inflammatory conditions.

The objective was to  create a pleasant and well-functioning, quality work space for the Cytology laboratory within the existing building envelope.

HEALTHCARE
2016

The Central Reference Laboratory (Autolab) offers a variety of specialised services. The main focus of this project was to plan a laboratory space for a new automated diagnostic track.

We envisaged a clean, open environment with services exposed and ordered. The result is a visually clinical, yet energising space.

FAGRON
Northcliff, Johannesburg

HEALTHCARE
2014

The new pharmaceutical era is reflected in the building's contemporary expression. Driven by international trends towards preventative healthcare, compounding pharmacies offer individualised prescription medicine to the public.

This project established the entry of Fagron, a Netherlands based company, to the South African market.

GLASSBOX
Saxonwold, Johannesburg

RESIDENTIAL
2010

Glassbox is nestled in the man-made Saxonwold forrest. It is a contemporary take on the International Style. A palette of raw concrete, steel and glass creates this cube.

Visual imagery transforms the interior throughout the seasons. It is a living machine that stimulates positive energy.

TOWER
Richards Bay

Our approach to the brief was to conceptualize a monolithic iconic shape with hints of maritime elements. The idea with creating a singular form was to present a structure that looks sleek, contemporary, and clean.

RESIDENTIAL TOWER
Sandton, Johannesburg

We envisaged this 16 storey residential tower as a compounded elliptical shape sitting on a parking podium, which covers the entirety of the site.

The shape of the apartment tower results in a dynamic floor plate where the individual apartments continuously recede from its neighbours.

Residential accommodation is made-up of 2 and three bedroom apartments with the top floor reserved for four luxury penthouses. Other amenities will include serviced offices, restaurants and gymnasium.

BRIDGE
Johannesburg

A bridge is a structure built to span physical obstacles without closing the way underneath such as a body of water, valley, or road, for the purpose of providing passage over the obstacle, usually something that can be detrimental to cross otherwise.

Teraco tasked the b2 Team to design a bridge that would link the JB1 Data Center with the, currently under construction, JB3 Data Center.

The new pedestrian and services bridge will span 40 meters and is conceptualised to read structurally ‘light’.  To achieve this, tensile cables are introduced to shorten the span of the two vierendeel girders on either side of the walking surface.

ROYAL JHB GOLF COURSE
Johannesburg

The Royal Johannesburg Golf Course is experiencing a growth phase with selected pockets of land being earmarked for residential development.

B2 Architects were commissioned to design four luxury residential units on a small site facing onto this beautiful landscape at the south-western end of the course.

Each unit is designed bespoke and varies between 419m² and  460m² in area. Big boxes clad in timber set as primary elements against a background of planted horizontal planes define the aesthetic.   The building mass is broken-up and steps down with the contours to blend the dwellings with the site.  Large glass facades optimises views onto the golf course.

RESIDENCE ROSSOUW
Johannesburg

At b2 Architects we very seldom accept private residential commissions but every now and then an opportunity arises to engage in something special.

This private home will be built on a sub divided property in one of the leafy suburbs of Johannesburg.  The program is accommodated over three floors with the entire middle floor being dedicated to an artist studio which opens onto an external roof garden designed as an extended outdoor working space.

Living and utility spaces are arranged at ground floor level with bedrooms on the uppermost level.  Both walls and floors will be in-situ concrete with minimum finishing treatment expressing honesty in its appearance.   It takes time and application to refine a building to appear minimalist and it usually belies the complexity of structure to achieve.
